The Matanuska-Susitna Valley (Called the "Mat-Su" or simply "the Valley" by locals) is a 23,000 sq. mile borough in south central Alaska. Rimmed by three enormous mountain ranges, the region is known for its spectacular natural beauty. The Mat-Su is home to Mt. McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. In the Valley, countless rivers and lakes provide wonderful opportunities for fishing and recreation. The area is also known for it's farming history and is home to the Alaska State Fair.
Economic and social issues present great challenges for Mat-Su residents. The Mat-Su is the fastest growing area in Alaska, but also has the highest rate of unemployment. The community also struggles with high rates of substance abuse. Winters are cold and dark, sometimes contributing to depression and other mental illnesses.
Despite these and other hardships, the Valley holds great potential. The people of the Mat-Su have a strong sense of community and are quick to assist those in need. In this spirit, The Mat-Su Agency Partnership (MAP) brings together dozens of local service organizations to better support Valley residents.
